Construction History of Edward Russell Johnston

Edward started his career and devoted two years of his profession with Diebold Contracting Services, Inc. which was a division of Diebold Inc.

Prefabricated Bank Buildings.

Diebold had a plant in Clearwater Florida which built prefabricated bank buildings. The sturdy heavy gauge steel frame buildings were assembled in two or three sections. The steel “skeleton frame” which consisted of vertical steel columns and horizontal I-beams, constructed in a rectangular grid to support the floors, roof and walls of a building were erected on heavy duty iron wheels then rolled slowly on rails through the plant to be completed.

Those structures were used for small bank branch offices. The offices could be transported to a site and assembled within 90 days. As a side note, we have used Diebold‘s modular concrete vault structure in one local Citrus County Bank.

Multilevel High-rise Construction

After Diebold, Edward dedicated four years with Tuttle/White Constructors Inc. Edwards duties varied but primarily concentrated on the site engineering, a fancy term for surveying. Edward laid out the building foundations, starting with pilings and then set the vertical and horizontal control lines through to the top of the buildings.

While employed with Tuttle/White Constructors, Edward experienced the opportunity to work on five waterfront hi-rise condominiums for U.S. Steel at Sand Key and Belleview-Biltmore in Clearwater, and two waterfront condominium towers at the Isle of Capri at Treasure Island Florida. All with distinctive contemporary architecture with fine details.

These buildings were constructed of solid concrete floors, columns and shear walls using the Flying Form System which is a type of concrete forming, widely used for supporting cast-in-place concrete slabs in multilevel high-rise construction.

Tilt-up Concrete Construction

Edward final assignment with Tuttle/White Constructors was in Gainesville Florida where the company erected a prison complex consisting of an administration building, warehouse, library and various cell building all using the Tilt-up or tilt-wall type of concrete building construction technique.

With the tilt-up method, concrete walls are formed horizontally on a concrete slab. After the concrete has cured, the slabs are tilted to the vertical position with a crane and braced into position until the remaining building structural components are secured. Tilt-up is a viable constriction system today for offices, warehouse and even residential homes. And the build time is quick.

In 1976 Edward was offered two employment options with Tuttle/White Constructors; Moving to Jacksonville Florida or Birmingham Alabama, neither which appealed to him, so Edward started his construction company and has been self employed as a Citrus County General Contractor for the past 40 years.
